So, Sunday night my friend Heather and I embarked upon a mission. A mission to close a loop that was opened 20 years ago almost to the month. This mission: to attend a New Kids on the Block concert and dress like you would have in the 80s. "What kind of ridiculous mission is that", you might ask. True, they are a boy band, and no, they are not "kids" any longer (average age = 38). BUT, they were the FIRST boy band, and they were my FIRST concert back in 5th grade. It's a rarity you get to go to a concert by the same band 20 years later so Heather and I put on our leg warmers and donned our crimped hair and jelly bracelets...and we were not disappointed.
We arrived at the American Airlines Center thinking we'd be the only ones dressed up. Not only were we mistaken, we were outdone. I've never seen so much fluorescence! We get to our seats and are taken aback at the sheer number of attendees. The place was packed with people just like us (though, it appears the NKOTB cater to a much larger crowd these days - literally speaking).
The first act was some chick who calls herself the "Princess of Jamaica". We couldn't really understand the lyrics of her songs, but one of them sounded like "My Nazis are Cold" - which is how we will refer to this song henceforth. After the Jamaican royalty left the stage, Natasha Bettingfield came on stage to rattle out some of her lame songs. If you have to spell the word, I don't want to hear it. You can take your "A-N-G-E-L" all the way back to London because I didn't go to a pep rally, I went to a concert.
Anyway, after she pranced off stage the greatness began. Josh lent me his binoculars (despite his testament that "boy band will rub off on them"), which allowed for true critique. The choreography was stellar. Just stellar. They are all in great shape and actually sounded good too. They stuck mostly to their new album, but did pepper in some oldies at key moments which got the crowd "a-roarin'"! You could cut the estrogen with a knife!
The night was greatness, but the drawback was we didn't get home until midnight and the concert was on a Sunday night. Besides that, it was greatness. I even appreciated the $45 shirts (mostly because at that price I refuse to buy them, so I saved money). :)
