I was cleaning out a junk drawer tonight and came upon a scrap of paper I'd saved since Thursday, May 8, 2003. It doesn't seem so long ago until you think about how it was actually four years ago, but that's not the point of the story. This scrap of paper was an email that my friend Liz had sent me. It was a contest she'd seen in the Washington Post asking contestants to submit "instructions" for anything, but written in the style of Shakespeare. The winning entry was the Hokey Pokey and I thought I would dedicate a blog to this hilarious work:
{AHEM}
O proud left foot, that ventures quick within
Then soon upon a backward journey lithe.
Anon, once more the gesture, then begin:
Command sinistral pedestal to writhe.
Commence thou then the fervid Hokey-Poke,
A mad gyration, hips in wanton swirl.
To spin! A wide release from Heaven's yoke.
Blessed dervish! Surely canst go, girl.
The Hoke, the poke - banish now thy doubt
Verily, I say, 'tis what it's all about.
To those who appreciate a good grammarian, I hope you enjoyed this. It was written (lest I get in trouble) by Jeff Brechlin of Potomac Falls. Three cheers for Jeff!
